Importance of Airport Runway and Taxiway Markings

Airport signs and pavement markings provide useful information to the pilot during landing, takeoff and taxiing. The safety and efficiency improve when there is uniformity in airport signs and markings from one airport to another. When pilots encounter incorrect, ineffective, or confusing markings or symbols on an airport, they should immediately make the operator management of the airport aware of the problem.

  • Runway Markings
Runway Markings have white markings. They are of three types, i.e. non-precision instrument, precision instrument, and visual. The determination of runway numbers and letters is done from the approach direction. It is a whole number nearing the one-tenth and measured clockwise from the magnetic north. The runway centerline marking marks the center of the runway and provides the guidelines of alignment during landing and takeoffs. For a landing aircraft, the runway aiming point marking serves as a visual aiming point.
